Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice
Often — but be honest about which fix you're doing. Software recalibration and cleaning solve contamination and miscalibration; persistent drift is usually a worn joystick module, and replacing it means intermediate-level soldering. Claims of "permanent" drop-in fixes deserve skepticism.
Effort: Easy (cleaning) to intermediate (module swap) · 30 min to 3 h · precision screwdrivers, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, soldering and desoldering tools, replacement joystick module
Diagnose before you open
Update the controller firmware and try the platform's built-in stick calibration or dead-zone settings first. If drift disappears after recalibration, it was calibration, not hardware. If it comes and goes, contamination is likely.
External cleaning
Careful cleaning around the stick base can clear dust that interferes with the mechanism. Don't flood the module with liquid — a damp swab, not a pour.
The real cause
Persistent drift is most often a worn joystick module: the carbon tracks and wipers inside wear with use, and no cleaning restores worn contacts. Full module replacement on controllers like the DualSense is an intermediate soldering and desoldering job, and the standard method destroys the removed module. The controller must be powered down with its battery disconnected before internal work.
unverified: "Permanent fix" claims for drop-in Hall-effect or TMR stick kits are not independently verified here — treat marketing as marketing.
Safety & stop rules
Must stop if: you can't safely desolder without damaging pads, the controller battery looks damaged, or the board has lifted pads.
Hand off to a pro if: soldering is beyond your skill, or drift persists after a clean module replacement (board-level fault).
PPE & ventilation: Eye protection; solder only with fume extraction or in a ventilated area, on a heat-safe surface.
Honest limits
Cleaning is maintenance, not a cure for worn hardware. Module replacement restores function, but no part is drift-proof forever — "permanent fix" is a sales claim, not a technical one.
