How to Jump-Start a Car

Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice

Yes, if the battery is physically intact: connect red to the dead car's positive, red to the donor car's positive, black to the donor car's negative, and the final black clamp to unpainted metal ground on the dead car — away from its battery, because the last connection sparks and batteries can vent hydrogen.

Effort: Easy · 10–15 min · jumper cables, a working donor vehicle

The order (memorize it)

  1. Red clamp to the dead battery's positive (+).
  2. Red clamp to the donor battery's positive (+).
  3. Black clamp to the donor battery's negative (−).
  4. Final black clamp to an unpainted metal ground point on the disabled vehicle — engine bracket or chassis — well away from its battery.
  5. Remove in exact reverse order.

Before you connect

Both vehicles off, parking brakes set, vehicles not touching. Inspect the dead battery: never jump a battery that is frozen, cracked, leaking, swollen, or otherwise damaged. No smoking or open flame near batteries, don't lean over them, and take off metal jewelry. Keep clamps and cables clear of fans and belts. If either owner's manual specifies dedicated jump posts or a different sequence, the manual wins.

Safety & stop rules

Must stop if: the battery shows any damage, the cables get hot, you smell sulfur strongly, or the car doesn't start after a reasonable attempt — repeated cranking won't fix a failed cell.

Hand off to a pro if: the vehicle has hybrid/EV high-voltage systems (follow only the owner's manual 12 V jump procedure), or a jump doesn't hold — that's a diagnosis job.

PPE & ventilation: Eye protection is prudent around batteries; remove metal jewelry. Work in open air — no enclosed-space ventilation issue beyond common sense.

Honest limits

A jump-start revives a discharged healthy battery; it does not repair a failed one. If the same battery needs jumping repeatedly, the battery or charging system needs professional diagnosis.
