How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice

Yes — it's a ten-minute job: buy the exact blade length for each side (driver and passenger sides often differ by about an inch), release the connector, slide the new blade in until it clicks, and test with washer fluid.

Effort: Easy · 10 min · replacement blades in the correct sizes, a clean towel, owner's manual or fitment guide

Buy the right size

Measure the old blades or check the fitment guide — don't assume both sides are the same length. Connector types also vary (J-hook, pin, and others), so confirm the new blade matches your wiper arm.

Remove and install

Lift the wiper arm to roughly perpendicular — don't over-bend it, because the spring-loaded arm can snap back hard enough to crack the windshield. Lay a folded towel on the glass as insurance. For a J-hook: press the release tab, slide the old blade out of the hook, slide the new blade in until you hear or feel it click, then lower the arm gently onto the glass. Rear wipers often use a pivot-pin connector instead — same principle, different latch.

Test

Run the washers and wipers and check for full, even contact across the sweep. Tug-test the blade before driving.

Safety & stop rules

Must stop if: the wiper arm itself is bent or damaged, or the connector type doesn't match the replacement blade.

Hand off to a pro if: this turns into a wiper-arm or linkage repair rather than a blade swap — arms are spring-loaded and the linkage is not a blade job.

PPE & ventilation: No special PPE or ventilation needed for a blade swap; the towel-on-glass precaution is the safety step that matters.

Honest limits

Replace blades when they're cracked, streaking, chattering, or missing areas — trade guidance suggests roughly every 6–12 months in harsh weather, but your blades and climate set the real interval. This article covers blade replacement, not wiper-arm or motor repair.
