Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice
Status as of 2026-09: Modern phones increasingly restrict features when non-original or uncalibrated parts are installed — but exactly which features lock, and on which model and OS version, changes with software updates. What follows is the mechanism and the verified picture; version-specific behavior needs rechecking.
Parts pairing means a component's identity is registered to the phone's logic board; calibration means configuring a replacement part so features like True Tone, auto brightness, or Battery Health reporting work again. Apple introduced Repair Assistant in iOS 18 specifically to configure genuine Apple replacement parts — reported to support iPhone 12 and later across displays, batteries, cameras, and other parts — and extended Activation Lock to parts as an anti-theft measure. Apple also positions its Self Service Repair program as intended for people experienced with complex electronics repairs.

What actually gets locked
Pairing restrictions are enforced in software and differ by manufacturer, model, part, and OS version. Documented, verifiable facts: iOS 18's Repair Assistant can configure genuine Apple replacement parts and restore features such as True Tone and auto brightness on displays, and Battery Health reporting on batteries; Activation Lock now extends to parts. Everything beyond that — especially third-party and aftermarket part behavior — is too variable to generalize.
unverified: A single repairer's field report claims all pairing broke in iOS 26.2.1. It is dated and uncorroborated — treat it as one field report, not established fact. Android behavior is not covered here for lack of a verified source.
What this means for your repair
If you replace a display, battery, or camera yourself, expect that some features may be limited or flagged until the part is properly configured — and budget for the possibility that configuration requires genuine parts or official tooling. Check the current Repair Assistant documentation for your exact model and OS before buying parts.
Honest limits
This is a moving target by design: manufacturers change pairing behavior in software updates, so any specific claim here can age out. Re-verify the current state for your model and OS version before acting.
