Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice
Maybe — check the exact model's service manual first. Many modern laptops use soldered RAM with no upgrade path at all, while storage usually upgrades fine if the slot type matches (2.5-inch SATA vs. M.2, and for M.2, SATA vs. NVMe support).
Effort: Easy to moderate · 30–60 min · small precision screwdrivers, plastic opening tool, anti-static wrist strap, compatible SO-DIMM or NVMe SSD, external backup drive
Step zero: check the manual
Confirm three things for your exact model: whether RAM is socketed (SO-DIMM) or soldered (LPDDR — no upgrade path), which generation and capacity of RAM is supported, and which SSD interface the slot takes. Buying before checking is the most common money lost on this job.
Prepare
Back up everything before touching a boot drive — replacement means cloning or a clean OS install. Shut the laptop down, remove the power cable, then discharge residual power by holding the power button for five seconds. Clear a static-safe workspace and ground yourself by touching a metal surface or wearing an anti-static wrist strap. Use the owner's manual for opening your specific case.
RAM
If socketed, match generation, SO-DIMM form factor, capacity, and supported speed. RAM is keyed — it seats at a slight angle and clicks down. Never force a keyed connector.
SSD
For NVMe M.2: hold the drive by its edges without touching the gold pins, align it, insert at a 30-degree angle without forcing, lower it into place, and tighten the screw or latch — snug, never overtightened. A newer-generation SSD generally works in an older-generation slot but only at the slot's speed. Consult the computer manual for setting the new drive as the boot drive.
Safety & stop rules
Must stop if: the internal battery can't be safely disconnected, panels are glued with no service access, or any connector needs force.
Hand off to a pro if: the bottom panel is heavily adhesived, the battery is glued over the components, or the machine is under a warranty you can't afford to void.
PPE & ventilation: No special PPE beyond careful handling; an anti-static wrist strap is the meaningful precaution. No ventilation requirement.
Honest limits
Compatibility is model-specific — slot generation, keying, and firmware limitations can all veto a physically fitting drive. Backups are not optional; this procedure destroys data by design.
