How to Change a Flat Tire

Evidence grade: B1 — Industry practice

Yes — on solid, level ground, away from traffic: secure the car, use only the owner's-manual jack points, and never put any part of your body under a vehicle held up by the emergency jack alone. The jack lifts; it does not make the car safe to work under.

Effort: Moderate · 20–45 min · spare tire, vehicle jack, lug wrench, owner's manual, wheel chock (or a rock/brick)

Set up

Stop on solid, level ground as far from traffic as possible. Hazards on, parking brake set, transmission secured (park or in gear). Chock the wheel diagonally opposite the flat. Find the jack points in the owner's manual now — not while the car is half-lifted.

Loosen, lift, remove

Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the tire is still on the ground. Place the jack only on the designated jack point and lift until the flat clears. Remove the lugs and the wheel.

Install

Mount the spare, thread the lugs on by hand, and snug them in a star/cross pattern. Lower the car until the tire just touches the ground, then tighten the lugs in the same star pattern. Final torque must meet the vehicle's specification — check the owner's manual rather than guessing a number.

Safety & stop rules

Must stop if: the ground is soft, sloped, or unstable; you can't identify a certain jack point; the roadside has fast traffic with no safe margin; lug nuts won't budge with reasonable force.

Hand off to a pro if: any of the above applies — call roadside assistance. Missing tools, seized lugs, or an uncertain jack point are all valid reasons, not failures.

PPE & ventilation: High-visibility basics — hazard lights, reflective vest if you have one, work gloves. No ventilation requirement.

Honest limits

A compact spare has model-specific speed and distance limits — check the tire sidewall and owner's manual rather than assuming a universal number. This procedure covers a roadside wheel swap, not tire repair or damage assessment.
